Search Engines, Tracing Family Histories & Visitors to Nova Scotia
July 30, 2001. One day in August 2000, Tom Yorke of Dallas, Texas, was using search engines to trace his family history, when a link to Captain Edward Yorke and Yorke Settlement in Nova Scotia popped up. By the end of that day, he had reserved a week at the Beach House, and Liz had introduced him, via e-mail, to Harriet Yorke McCready who wrote the Yorke Family History. Harriet has been working with Tom ever since to sort out how he is related to the Yorkes in Nova Scotia. To find out about plans for the Yorkes' visit to Nova Scotia, go to the press release.

Imagine how surprised Tom was
to see this sign on his monitor!

Dear Liz: It's hard to believe that our week here is nearly over. What a fabulous place! We have had a super time - the kids love the salt water marsh and the weather has been perfect.

Thanks,
Jan and Rick, Mount Albert, Ontario

Dedication of War Memorial in Honour of John Chipman Kerr, V.C. and those who served during the two world wars and the Korean Conflict, Port Greville, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia

This solemn ceremony was held on a beautiful afternoon on July 22, 2001 in Port Greville.. It was a day to remember - people came from across Canada and the US to remember their friends and relatives, and to bring elderly parents to the dedication. Her Honour, Myra A. Freeman, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia unveiled the monument. Her Honour was accompanied by Loring Kerr, nephew of Chipman Kerr. Loring wore his medals and his civilian clothes were beautifully set off by his Kerr tartan tie.

Many local veterans from both wars and the Korean conflict, in their uniforms and wearing their medals, and active and reserve military personnel participated in the dedication. .Land Force Atlantic Area arranged for a fly past during the dedication ceremony, and it touched all the senses when the plane flew over the veterans and military personnel, visitors, the villages, the Nova Scotian and Canadian flags and the Union Jack - all on a lovely warm day with a refreshing wind gently blowing in from the Bay of Fundy. Several wreaths were laid at the monument during the dedication ceremony. The ACSTC Argonaut Military Band performed, a young woman bugler played the Last Post, and The Princess Louise Fusiliers acted as the Firing Party.

Liz made special arrangements to attend the dedication, and brought her Mother, Madge Yorke, from Halifax. Madge's brother, Thornton Murray Winter, was overseas in World War II and his name is on the memorial with those of all the other men and women from the three communities who also served.

Liz sends warm congratulations to Estelle Larson and all the members of the War Memorial Committee for organizing this wonderful event.

Dan and Joanne Albert and Jack and Shirley Holt visit Nova Scotia
Dan and Joanne Albert and Jack and Shirley Holt, all from California, stayed at the Beach House during their visit to Nova Scotia in May 2001. Dan Albert is the Mayor of Monterey - he and Joanne live in Monterey and their friends, Jack and Shirley Holt, live in Pacific Grove, California.

On May 12, 2001, Murray Scott, member of Nova Scotia's Legislative Assembly and Speaker of the House, officially welcomed the Alberts and the Holts to Nova Scotia and inducted them into the Order of the Good Time at a ceremony held at the Beach House. The Order of the Good Time, founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1606, is the oldest social club in North America. Ratchford Merriam, local council member, brought official greetings from Cumberland County, and gave them Cumberland County pins to take home to California. After the induction, everyone went for Afternoon Tea at Ebbtide Victorian Tea Room in Port Greville.

The Alberts and the Holts took a day trip to Halifax during their week at the Beach House. When they were in Halifax, Murray Scott arranged for them to have a tour of the Legislative Assembly and invited them to sit in the Speaker's Gallery of the Legislature to see how proceedings are carried out in the province. Mr. Scott formally introduced the Alberts and the Scotts to the members of the Legislative Assembly, who welcomed them with a warm round of applause.

The Moirs and Friends Celebrated Their Wedding Anniversaries at the Beach House in April

The Moirs and their friends celebrated their wedding anniversaries at the Beach House in April.

Phil Moir, his wife and their friends
Intro from Liz... Phil Moir (and friends) spent a weekend at the Beach House in April - go to his web site at
www.golfingns.com/beachhouse/ to read his review and to see the pictures he took. He is such a good writer, that I want you to have the chance to read everything he wrote.

It happens... I am at a loss for words.

I have the same feeling today, that I get after I have had a truly wonderful meal, or after seeing a spectacular movie, or seeing stunning scenery for the first time. I don't want to put it into words, because words are not adequate to fully describe such a rich feeling. Rather, I like to sit and savour the moment, trying desperately to memorize sights, smells, tastes, feelings, and store them in my memory so that I can pull them back out when ever I choose.

Everything was wonderful, and above expectations (if that was possible). The sunny warm weather, the amazing beach, the artistic driftwood, the crimson blueberry fields, the rich history of the area, the hospitality of the Shaws, (note from Liz - the Shaws own Shaw Country Market, and keep the BH keys), the peaceful bike rides, the serene walks, the warmth of the sun decks and the romance, oh the romance...

I will send you a review soon, but for a day or two, I will savour the moments and at the same time try to get my mind back in a work mode (I don't think it will be possible).

When you find a treasure, the first instinct is to tell nobody, and to keep it to yourself. However, I have never been good at keeping such large secrets, many friends and colleagues already know that.

Phil Moir, his wife and their friends
